Currently, a kite surfer must own 2-3 kites to accommodate various wind conditions. A large kite is used for light wind, while a smaller kite is deployed in high wind. Kites generally cost anywhere from $1000-$1800 dollars and so this financial commitment represents a significant barrier to entry.
Engine kites is in the process of developing a reefable kite that can be used in a variety of wind conditions. Essentially, a light wind kite is folded to decrease the exposed area and serve as a high wind kite. Adjusting the size of the kite would be quick and done prior to entering the water. We are currently iterating on our third prototype, affectionately named “Ghost” (picture below).
